Did you know some of the absolute BEST things you can do for your health are FREE? These are the keys to the castle, folks - you’d put an entire industry out of business if you nailed these on the regular (don’t worry about me, my career backups are professional organization or travel planning, I'd be alright).
1. CHEW Your Food
Chewing your food thoroughly allows you to absorb more nutrients from your food, helps you maintain a healthy weight, allows for easier digestion, and leads to fewer digestive issues like gas and bloating.
2. MOVE A Little Every Day
If trying to find the perfect program or gym is keeping you from moving every day, you’re doing it wrong. Youtube 15-minute workout routines. Getting out of your office chair every 30 minutes.
3. SLEEP 7-9 Hours
Chronic short sleep affects menstrual cycles, reduces sperm count, increases risks of heart disease, obesity and diabetes and...get this...makes us uglier! (“Cues of fatigue: effects of sleep deprivation on facial appearance” Sundelin T, et al. Sleep. 2013).
4. SUNSHINE On Your Skin
Vitamin D protects against inflammation, lowers blood pressure, helps muscles, improves brain function and may even protect against cancer. You don’t need much but you need it to touch your skin a few minutes every day.
5. Be STILL
A lack of stillness has detrimental effects on our lives. Aristotle and others throughout Western tradition have regarded contemplation as the highest activity and intimately connected with happiness.
6. PLAN and PREPARE Your Meals
Food may not be free but planning your meals is. Knowing how much you need at the store and then prepping that food will always be one of the greatest things you can do for your health.
7. INVEST In Meaningful Relationships
Dozens of studies have shown that people who have satisfying relationships with family, friends, and their community are happier, have fewer health problems, and live longer. Invest in the people you’d want on your lifeboat.
How many of these do you do on a regular basis? Did I miss anything?
Let's return to health, together.
